It’s in the centre, get it!

Is it only me, or is anyone else a bit baffled by the GMex rebrand?

The poor GMex has been sitting there, with (apparently) little money spent promoting it (and its name), sitting proud and unloved, and then along comes a new name and the inevitable marketing budget and suddenly all the accusations start to fly.

The GMex has little awareness they say, and, wait for it, it’s in the centre of Manchester and this needs to be pushed. Well, knock me down with a tram to Bury, the GMex was a good name, and it was specific to Manchester. Manchester Central? ‘Central’ could be transported to any city in the world. It has little connotations with the past, as most folk who remember the station are dead. Provincial and boring – quite an achievement.

I quite like the central redesign, although the ‘central’ tag does make it sound a little like a club out of Eastenders. Makes the place sound more appealing with a strong historical reference which should never have been lost in first place, and a greater sense (by ‘greater’ I mean less specific) of what functions it can carry out. I’m never going to tell my kids I saw James perform at an ‘Exhibition hall’ am I?
